Description
Henlaw Tunnel, built around 1810 for Sir Francis Blake, is a tunnel located approximately 400 yards southwest of Tillmouth Park Hotel. The tunnel is constructed of ashlar and measures about 4 feet wide, 6 feet 6 inches high, and 100 feet long, with iron railings.
The north entry features a round arch with an arch ring and a triple keystone, while the south entry is similar but accessed by a flight of 10 steps that also has railings. Inside, the tunnel has a round vault, with the first 30 feet finished in ashlar and the remainder in rusticated ashlar.
This tunnel serves as one of the garden features of Tillmouth Park, appearing to be set within an artificial mound.
