Description

The Old Market Cross is a market cross located against the churchyard wall, 2 metres east of Vicar's Pele in Corbridge Market Place. It is made of cut stone and features a worn circular moulded capital, which is likely of Roman origin. The shaft dates from the 13th century and retains some remains of dogtooth ornamentation at the angles. The head of the cross is plain and dates from the 18th century. Originally, the cross stood on a Roman altar in the market place but was removed to Newcastle in 1807 and returned in the 20th century.
