Description

This headstone, located approximately 3 yards south of the Church of St. Mary, commemorates James Charlton, who died in 1795 at the age of 24. It is made of sandstone and features a scrolled pedimented top adorned with a shell. The headstone has a moulded surround and includes a relief carving of an urn along with symbols of death. The inscription reads: "Our life tho' short is mix'd with much alloy. Death blasts a father's hope, a mother's joy. Their fondest prospects quickly does destroy. From us, alas, our darling youth is torn This may excuse our weakness when we mourn. Ours is the loss, the gain is all his own."
