Description
The Ponteland War Memorial, built in 1920, is a granite structure featuring black lead lettering. It takes the form of an obelisk that sits atop a three-stage plinth. The west side of the obelisk, which faces the road, is decorated with a relief carving of a pair of rifles, largely covered by two crossed flags, and topped with a laurel wreath. Inscribed below the top stage of the plinth are the words:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN MEMORY OF/THOSE CONNECTED WITH/ THIS PARISH OF PONTELAND/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ REST ETERNAL GRANT TO THEM O LORD/ AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE/UPON THEM."
The names of those who lost their lives are listed on the north and south sides, including their rank and regiment. The lower two stages of the plinth also bear an additional 24 names without further details, along with the dates 1939-1945.
