Description
Vicarage Tower is a tower house located on Main Street in Ponteland. It is said to date from the 14th century, but the existing remains appear to be from the 16th or early 17th century. The structure is built of random rubble, patched with brick, and has three storeys, measuring approximately 24 by 20 feet in plan.
On the south side, there are three large openings that feature 20th-century lintels. The west side has a blocked 16th-century door with a chamfered surround, along with a roof groove and holes for roof timbers from a former adjoining wing. One chamfered jamb of the doorway into this wing remains, complete with a har post and drawbar slot. There is also a blocked door on the first floor that incorporates part of an early-medieval grave cover with a Celtic cross as a jamb stone. Additionally, there are two 16th-century windows with chamfered surrounds and a roof groove from the former attached wing. At the time of the survey, the tower was noted as a controlled ruin.
