Description
Nos. 1-3 Middle Row are a row of three cottages built around 1740, with the west cottage raised in height around 1880. They are constructed from squared stone with dressings and feature a slate roof. The cottages are two storeys tall and have seven irregular bays. The boarded doors are located in bays 1, 3, 4, and 7, with three-pane overlights above all except the door in bay 3. The ground floor of bays 5 and 6 has 12-pane Yorkshire sash windows in chamfered surrounds, while bay 2 has plain stone surrounds for its ground floor window, and bays 5 and 6 have plain stone surrounds for their first-floor windows. The first floor of bay 3 has a Yorkshire sash window with the glazing bars removed. There are stepped and corniced stone stacks on the ridge and at the right end, with the central stack rebuilt on an old base. The left return features a central blocked door in a chamfered surround, with an old 12-pane casement window in a plain stone surround above.
These cottages are believed to have been built by Sir William Blackett for the Italian stuccatori who worked on the reconstruction of Wallington Hall. They are also known as Postillion's Row.
