Description
Clock Tower Gate is a gateway with a tower and flanking coach houses, built in 1754 by Daniel Garrett. It features finely-tooled ashlar stonework and has slate and lead roofs. The courtyard elevation includes a plinth and a central moulded round-headed arch, flanked by paired Tuscan columns that support a pediment. Above this, the tower has large scrolled brackets, an 18th-century single-handed clock face, a moulded cornice, and a cupola that houses a bell. The tower's drum is supported by nine columns and topped with a lead dome and weathervane.
The broad flanking bays each have a similar round-headed arch with double doors and a slatted tympanum, flanked by recesses that are domed below and square above. There is a moulded cornice and a low parapet, with flattened ball finials and spikes on swept bases at the ends. The lower walls on the far left and right have a plinth and flat coping, linking back to the stable ranges.
On the north elevation, the tower features a circular window with radial glazing instead of a clock face, and the flanking bays each have three pairs of recesses, domed below and square above, with one pair of similar recesses in the right return. There is a second old clock face on the left return of the tower and a blind circular window on the right. The central carriageway is tunnel-vaulted, with glinting at each end and a domed niche on each side.
Originally, the block was designed as a chapel, and the original unsigned drawings are preserved in the Hall.
