Description
The North-west Courtyard Range and courtyard wall at Wallington Hall is a Grade II* listed structure that was originally built as stabling in the mid-18th century, with a shelter shed added in 1766. The building is constructed from squared stone with dressings and features slate roofs. It is arranged in an L-plan and consists of two storeys, with the north range having nine bays and the east range having seven bays. The exterior showcases raised quoins and surrounds, as well as an external stone stair leading to a first-floor boarded door in the sixth bay of the north range. There is a blocked segmental carriage arch with a rusticated surround in the seventh bay of the east range. The building has sash windows, some of which have been renewed, and hipped roofs with stepped and corniced stone stacks.
At the rear of the north range, there is a shelter shed with nine bays. This shed features a central projecting gabled bay with a segmental arch, flanked by similar arcades, and includes a plinth and impost band. The gable and returns are coped with moulded kneelers, and the roof is a lean-to.
The flat-coped courtyard wall extends south from the east range and then returns west to connect with the north-east wing of the Hall. The gateway in this section has piers with rustication, vermiculate on the south face, and pedimented caps. Additionally, there is a five-step mounting block located to the west of the gate.
