Description

Pottergate Tower is a Grade II* listed structure that was formerly part of the town's defences. It was rebuilt in 1768 to a design by Mr. Henry Bell, featuring a crown spire that was removed in 1812. The tower is designed in a Gothick style, with decorative elements on the east side. It has two stages: the ground floor includes an archway with a barrel vaulted passage supported by three ribs, while the first floor features blind tracery panels and a large ogee window with perpendicular type tracery. The tower is topped with an open embattled parapet and diagonal buttresses that have four stages of blind cusped arches with crocketted labels, culminating in stunted tops. Above the archway, there is a depiction of St. Michael and the Dragon, a blank roundel that once held a clock, and a memorial tablet stating that the tower was rebuilt at the expense of the Borough of Alnwick, with the new foundation laid on April 28, 1768, by John Grey Senior, William Hindmarsh, Robert Richardson, and Edward Bell, Chamberlain. To the north and south of the tower are fragments that may be remnants of the old town walls. The north, south, and west fronts are simpler in design, featuring occasional arrow slits. A staircase is located in the north-west corner.
