Description
South Farm is a house built in the early 18th century, with a staircase wing added to the rear in 1771 and a service wing added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a tiled roof, showcasing a classical style. It stands three storeys high with five bays, featuring rusticated quoins. The central entrance has a two-leaf door framed by an architrave, a pulvinated frieze, a cornice, and a pediment. There are sill bands on the ground and first floors, along with a broader band on the first floor. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and the eaves cornice supports a gabled roof with flat coping and kneelers, complemented by corniced stacks at the ends and ridge.
The staircase wing includes two large round-headed windows set in raised surrounds, complete with impost blocks, keystones, and radial glazing bars. A decorative downpipe and rainwater head, dated 1771, features cherubs.
Inside, the staircase is notable for its sturdy stick balusters, a ramped handrail, and turned newels, along with two-panel doors and shutters.
