Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a Church of England building that was rebuilt in 1755, possibly reusing older masonry in the north wall of the nave, by Mrs. H.D. Windsor. It was Gothicized between 1865 and 1867 by Rev. T. Harris. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has a Welsh slate roof. It features a nave with a south porch and a chancel with a vestry. The nave has three bays and includes an 18th-century south porch with a round-headed doorway that has impost blocks and raised alternating voussoirs. Above the doorway is a cartouche inscribed with "HD WINDSOR BUILDING & ENDOWING 1755."
The church has two-light Decorated windows, and the two-bay chancel contains a priest's door with a double hollow-chamfered surround, as well as Decorated windows and a three-light east window. The gabled roof of the nave includes kneelers that are carved with grotesque heads, which may be re-used 17th-century work. A striking west bellcote features obelisks capped by volutes at each corner of the base, a tall bell stage with trefoiled heads to the lights, obelisk finials at each corner, and a central pyramid topped with a ball finial.
The interior, dating from 1857, has plastered walls, a rafter roof in the nave, and tie-beam trusses in the chancel, along with simple Gothic furnishings. Attached to the south wall of the nave is a gravestone for Anne Hermitage, dated 1811, which has a shaped top and is well carved with an angel and scrolls. The inscription reads: "Time was with me, 'Tis now with thee:- The world with me is o'er So it will be ere long with thee:- When time shall be no more. Then while 'tis day O watch and pray Thy precious soul to save. Be timely wife:- There's no device Nor working in the grave."
