Description
Numbers 36 to 40 Priestpopple, dated 1776, is a three-storey building featuring two windows on the second floor and three on the first floor. The structure is made of coursed dressed rubble with quoins and lintels. It has late glazed sash windows and two modern shop fronts at Nos 36 and 40, which include a central through passage. The shop front for No 40, dating from the late 19th century, has three fascia brackets and partly fluted colonettes supporting plate glass windows, with a recessed door to the left. A central lintel on the first floor is carved with "M.A." over "1776." Additionally, the lintel at the rear of the through passage features a medieval corbel head of a lady, possibly from the Lavatorium of Hexham Priory. The rear east verge shows tumbled brickwork. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 14 to 48 and Orchard House, with Nos 14 to 18, 26 to 34, and 42 to 46 and 44A being of local interest.
