Description
The Royal Hotel is a building dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, featuring a decorative domed bay that is of a much more recent date, located to the right of the center. The hotel stands three storeys tall and has a symmetrical facade with eight windows. It is constructed of painted brick, accented with stone lintels and quoins. The quoins are present at the coach arch on the left side and at the slightly projecting corner of the right half of the hotel. There is a kneeler on the left side and a slight eaves cornice on the right. The windows are primarily plate glass sash, except for a round-headed window on the second floor of the domed bay, which includes glazing bars. The dome itself is covered with fish scale slating and rises from a square base adorned with Adamesque stucco decoration, including urns and bucrania. The ground floor has been modernized, featuring two four-light windows and a modern shop window. A coachway leads to modern wings at the rear. The Royal Hotel is part of a group with Nos 14 to 48 (even) and Orchard House, with Nos 14 to 18, 26 to 34, and 42 to 46 and 44A being of local interest.
