Description
Barclays Bank is an imposing Neo-Georgian building constructed in the late 19th or early 20th century. It stands three storeys tall and features four windows, with the side bays slightly projecting forward. The exterior is made of ashlar stone and is adorned with a carved vine frieze, a modillion cornice, and a parapet with balusters and urn-capped dies. The east gable verge is shaped, and there are moulded cill strings. The second floor has glazing bar sash windows with eared architraves, while the first floor displays rusticated quoins and flat arches topped with triangular and segmental pediments. A very wide fascia is present over the ground floor, which features four arched plate glass windows supported by rusticated Ionic columns on a battered plinth. A modern entrance is located to the right. Barclays Bank, along with No. 2, forms a group with the Midland Bank at Cattlemarket.
