Description
The Midland Bank, built in 1897 by G. C. Oliver of Carlisle, is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of Cattle Market at the end of Fore Street. It has an irregular plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring an apsidal shape facing Fore Street and a gable-ended front towards Cattle Market. The building has complex elevations, with the Cattle Market front showcasing raised surrounds to the ground floor windows, which are adorned with architraves and segmental pediments. The first and second floor windows are divided by strips and topped with strapwork. The first floor features round-headed casement windows, while the second floor has two-light casement windows.
At the top, the gable is capped with a semi-circular pediment that includes a tablet with three small lights beneath it. The east corner of the building features a five-sided, three-light oriel window with bands of red sandstone above an ornate doorway, which has been converted into a window. A pepperpot dome is also present. The west corner mirrors the east with another five-sided, three-light window and sandstone bands, along with pediments over the windows. There is a former doorcase with a decorative lintel and a panelled chimney to the left. The sides of the building taper down to a two-storey semi-circular front on Fore Street, which has overhanging eaves and a carved frieze in red sandstone depicting sovereigns, shillings, and pennies.
The Midland Bank is part of a group of buildings that includes No 2 (Lloyds Bank) and No 4 (Barclays Bank), as well as Priestpopple.
