Description
36 Fore Street is a mid-18th century building that was formerly known as the Sun Inn. It has been significantly altered and features three storeys with two windows. The main gable above the house is connected by a low parapet to a smaller gable over the coach entrance. The structure is built of brick with chamfered quoins, and it has stone lintels and cills. On the right side and on the second floor to the left, there are glazing bar sash windows. The first-floor window on the left is a late 19th-century three-light display window with arched heads, separated by fluted columns within a rectangular recess. The ornate early 20th-century shop front has an arcaded design with art nouveau strapwork in the spandrels. The south return features three windows with architraves on the ground floor windows and entrances. The rear gable end has kneelers, one glazing bar sash window on each floor, and rounded quoins at the coachway. The coach passage is paved with cobbles and flagstones. This building, along with Nos 36 and 44 and Nos 23 to 33 (odd), forms a group, with Nos 31 and 33 being of local interest.
