Description
The Haslerigg grave and railings, located about 220 metres northwest of Swarland Old Hall, date from the 17th century or the late 19th century. The grave features cut stone and wrought iron. The original recumbent rectangular slab is now illegible, but the inscription, transcribed in 1810, has been copied onto a late 19th-century arched headstone. It reads: "Here lies the Body of WILLIAM HESILRIGE Who departed this Life April 12, 1681 Aged 88 Years This was Grandson to Esquire, Yet to lie here was his desire; Precious dust lies here enshrin'd Which (friends are asked to bear in mind) All worldly pomp he did abhor And (scorned the vaulted corridor) That dust might here mingle with clay, Till call'd by God on the last day."
