Description
The Schoolhouse, formerly known as the Borough School, is a former school building dated 1736. It is constructed of squared stone with cut dressings, while the rear elevation is faced with concrete and rendered. The roof is made of pantiles, with stone slates at the eaves on the rear and Welsh slates on the porch, alongside brick stacks. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The central entrance features a top-glazed five-panel door and a sunk lintel panel that bears a worn inscription, which is now largely illegible, stating, "This house was built by George Lawson of Gloster Hill who gave it to the town for a school-house, 1736." Above the door is a two-light mullioned window with six-pane casements. The end bays contain 12-pane Yorkshire sash windows, and all openings are framed in chamfered block surrounds. The gables have raised reverse-stepped copings, with a banded stack on the right end and a rebuilt stack on the left end. There is a small porch at the left end with a renewed door. The left return features 20th-century casements set in the original openings on both the ground and first floors.
Historically, the building functioned as the Borough School until around 1890, after which it served as a village meeting room in the early 20th century.
