Description
The Bridge Head Tower is a gate tower located at the south end of the bridge, dating from the late 14th century, with some restoration and patching from the 19th century. It is constructed from large squared stone with cut dressings and has a rectangular plan measuring 8.3 by 5.5 metres externally.
The north elevation features a double-chamfered, four-centred archway with a slit window to the right. The upper floor is in ruins, but the chamfered left jamb of a window remains. Each return has a square-headed chamfered loop on the upper floor, with a stone spout located below the loop on the east side. The south elevation displays a plain arch and loop to the left, along with the remains of two windows on the upper floor.
Inside, the gate passage has a rough four-centred vault. At the inner end of the passage, there is a two-panel door in a chamfered round arch leading to a newel stair on the east side, and a studded vertical-panelled door in a similar arch leading to the guard chamber on the west side. The guard chamber features a similar vault and a stone bench at the north end. The upper chamber, which has not been seen, is said to contain a fireplace and three roof corbels.
Historically, this tower is a rare example of a fortified gateway on a bridge. In the 18th century, the guard chamber was used as the village lock-up.
