Description

This is a pair of early to mid-18th century houses located at 8-14 Narrowgate. The properties were originally built as residences but now contain shops on the ground floor. They are three storeys high and feature three windows on each side. The houses are constructed of coursed squared rubble, with Nos. 12 and 14 additionally tooled for rendering. They have a cavetto moulded eaves cornice, coped verges with kneelers, and slate roofs punctuated by three brick chimneys. Nos. 8 and 10 have sash windows with glazing bars, although the central window on the second floor is slightly misaligned. Nos. 12 and 14 have later sash windows. No. 8 contains a modern shop front, which incorporates the remains of a shop sign from a former tea shop called the ‘Golden Canister’. No. 10 features a three-light canted bay window where a bow window previously stood. A heavily moulded early 18th century bolection doorway is situated between Nos. 8 and 10, and originally led to Golden Canister Yard. No. 12 has a two-light shop front with an angled and recessed central door and a modern fascia. No. 14 has a two-light shop window above a flush panel door.
