Description
Numbers 58 and 60 Bondgate Within are two-storey buildings that are said to have originally been constructed from stone taken from the first abbey that was burned in the 12th century. While they likely have a medieval structure at their core, they have been significantly altered and are now representative of the 16th or 17th century, with further modifications made later.
The buildings feature a steep pitched slate roof and two brick chimneys, one located centrally (which was formerly a large breast) and another to the right. Number 58 has two windows with 19th-century glazing bar sashes and a rendered front. Number 60 is built from rubble and has a modern casement window on the left and a blind window on the right, adorned with a Tudor label featuring Percy Crescent and a lion. The shop front of Number 58 includes carved fascia scrolls and a doorway situated between the windows, while Number 60 has a smaller two-light shop window with a door to the right and a bracketed fascia.
To the right of Number 60, there is a doorway leading to a through passage, which features a de Vesci shield with a cross patonce on the east wall. The passage ends in an old, now rendered, round-headed arch. Additionally, in the wall of a former hatter's shop at the rear of the premises, there is a medieval corbel head and a shaft ring.
