Description

South Lodge and attached quadrant walls were built around 1870 by J.A. Hansom. The structure features tooled-and-margined ashlar with smooth ashlar dressings, and the roof is not visible. It has wood and iron gates and is designed in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The south elevation is divided into three parts, with a chamfered plinth and a moulded string below embattled parapets. The central tower contains a double-chamfered, four-centred arched doorway framed in a square with traceried panels in the spandrels and heraldic stops on the hoodmould, topped by a canted oriel. There are stacks with octagonal shafts rising from the parapet on each return, and a taller octagonal stair turret is located at the rear right. The single-storey flanking bays include a canted bay window on the right and a three-light window on the left, with all windows featuring diamond-latticed casements.

The two-bay gate passage has a groin vault with chamfered ribs that spring from foliage-carved corbels, and there is a pointed doorway on each side. The 19th-century openwork gates have stop-chamfered stiles and rails, along with iron dogbars that feature fleur-de-lys heads.

The quadrant walls consist of 13 bays each, with the upper part set back between gabled piers and topped with gabled coping.
