Description

This is a headstone, likely from the mid 18th century, located 1 metre south of the Church of St. Mungo in Simonburn. It is made of sandstone and stands 1.5 metres tall. The top of the headstone is segmental with projecting rounded shoulders, featuring crude incised floral motifs that probably represent thistles. There is a sunk panel with a shaped head, which displays a bold relief of a headless figure. The figure has its right hand resting on an hourglass and its left hand clutching a bone. The reverse of the headstone is inscribed, but the inscription cannot be read as it is set close to the church wall.
