Description

The Queens Hall and Town Hall Buildings, designed by architect John Johnston, were constructed between 1865 and 1866. This two-storey building is made of ashlar and features an exuberant French style. It has a three-bay central section that slightly projects under a pediment set into the parapet, flanked by five bays on either side. The ground floor includes two round arches, while the upper floor has a round-headed window that rises into an open pediment, supported by pilasters with round arches on columns. There are flat-headed windows on both floors to the right and left, and the building has an open arcaded parapet. The ground floor is rusticated, and the wings on either side are taller and project slightly, featuring flat-headed doors and windows. The upper floor displays angle quoins and round-headed windows, topped with a heavy bracketed cornice and an elaborate parapet with a central pedimented window. The roof is tall, covered with nipped slate and adorned with iron cresting. The south elevation features six circular windows on the first floor, with a rusticated ground floor that includes a blind shouldered doorway and steps leading to an off-centre porch. The Queens Hall and Town Hall Buildings, along with the Trinity Methodist Church and Church Hall, form a group of local interest with the consecutive buildings at Nos 1 to 9 Beaumont Street.
