Description

The Iron Bridge, located 200 metres northwest of Blagdon Hall, is a bridge dated 1881, designed by J.N. Cresswell and J.A. Somerset of St. Nicholas Iron Works in Newcastle, as indicated by the dated plates on the parapet. It is constructed of cast and wrought iron on concrete piers, with squared stone abutments featuring ashlar dressings. The bridge is a girder design supported by two pairs of tall tapering piers that carry short iron columns with spandrel brackets. The openwork parapet consists of trefoil-ended panels with a looped half rail and external loop-footed brackets. Each parapet has circular builder's plates at its center, and the exterior west parapet displays the Ridley arms, initials MWR, and the date. The splayed abutments are topped with a balustraded parapet featuring gabled coping between the piers, which have flat moulded caps.
