Description

Conway House, the premises of R.G. Bolam and Sons, is a house with a ground floor shop, built in 1876, featuring an early 19th-century rear wing. The building is constructed of tooled ashlar, while the rear wing is made of squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof and is designed in the Italianate style. The structure rises three storeys plus an attic and has five windows.

The ground floor showcases an ornamental timber cornice that projects above pilasters flanking the shopfront on the left and the yard entrance on the right. The shopfront features twin basket-arched windows with a moulded stone plinth and flanking fluted and twisted cast-iron uprights, along with a central pair of half-glazed doors. The yard entrance is marked by panelled double gates, with the upper parts opening to reveal ornamental wrought-iron screenwork and a three-pane overlight.

On the first floor, there are arched windows with moulded sill and impost bands, and the archivolts are adorned with keystones featuring incised ornament, including a central date. The second floor has moulded bands below the aprons and at the impost level of the basket-arched windows. A moulded eaves cornice rests on large paired brackets. The roof features two timber dormers with moulded three-centred arches, and the gables are coped on shaped foot stones, with truncated end stacks. All windows are plain sashes.

To the rear left, there is a three-bay wing with renewed 12-pane sashes set in alternating-block surrounds. This building is included for its group value, although the altered L-plan range at the end of the wing is not of special interest.
