Description
Rothbury Cross is a market cross that serves as a memorial, designed by C.C. Hodges. It is constructed from ashlar stone and is in the Arts and Crafts style. The cross is set on a square base, which is reached by four steps, and is inscribed with a dedication stating, "This Monument was erected in the year 1902 on the site of the ancient market cross by the inhabitants of Rothbury and other Friends in admiration and grateful remembrance of the long and useful lives of William George Baron Armstrong of Cragside G.B. (1810-1900) and of Margaret his wife (1807-1893)."
The cross features a tall, tapering shaft adorned with an oak scroll that is inhabited by a stag, squirrels, and birds. The head of the cross is a Celtic design with a central boss. The right side of the shaft displays various knotwork and key patterns, while the left side features a vine scroll. The rear face is decorated with a rose scroll that includes rabbits and birds. The overall height of the cross is 6.9 metres.
The cross is situated on a square of paving that has projecting blocks at the corners and on each side, which once supported iron standards for a former railing. The current cast-iron railings are not of special interest.
