Description
The Rothbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial fountain, built in 1923 by Reavell and Tebbs. It is made of sandstone and bronze. The memorial features a square stone pedestal topped with a stone cross on a stepped plinth, which has a bronze sword affixed to the cross. The pedestal displays the names of the fallen on the front and rear, with an inscription on the third side.
The inscription on the front reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF/ THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914-1918/ (NAMES)." The rear inscription states: "TO THE MEMORY OF/ THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1939-1945/ (NAMES) KOREA 1952/ (NAME)." The side inscription says: "THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT/ ARE LEFT GROW OLD/ AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS/ CONDEMN./ AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The pedestal plinths are inscribed with the dates of the three conflicts, and there are stone water troughs at the base of the pedestal on the front and rear.
This well-maintained and well-executed war memorial is simple yet striking, reflecting strong local ties with the names of those who fell in two World Wars and the Korean War.
