Description

The Herdman vault, located to the north of the tower of the Church of St. Mary in Lesbury Village, is a family vault dated 1827. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a rectangular shape measuring approximately 4 by 3 metres. The vault features diagonal buttresses at the western corners. The west face displays channeled rusticated stonework and a blocked segmental arch, which is topped by a tablet inscribed with the words 'THE FAMILY VAULT OF DOCTOR HERDMAN' along with the date. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the structure. Additionally, the exposed footings of an earlier structure can be seen on the south side.
