Description
Lesbury Bridge over the River Aln is a bridge that likely dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of squared stone, with parts that are tooled and margined from the 19th century. The bridge features two arches, which have steeply-canted cutwaters between them that rise to form refuges. The eastern side of the bridge has been widened. The north arch, which faces the river, is segmental, while the south arch, which faces potential flooding, is segmental-pointed; both arches have triple-chamfered edges. The 19th-century parapets have chamfered coping and end in small piers with chamfered caps. Glinters are present at the internal angles of the refuges. The bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Northumberland.
