Tomb Of Katherine Babington, Wall And Statues Approx 20 Yds West Of Harnham Hall

The Tomb of Katherine Babington, along with its garden walls and statues, is located approximately 20 yards west of Harnham Hall. The tomb dates back to 1670, with the walls likely from the same period, while the statues are from the 18th century. The walls are constructed from a mix of random rubble and bedrock. The tomb, which is set into the wall, features a random rubble facade with an ashlar door surround, and its interior is carved from solid rock. The statues are made of sandstone.

The wall is approximately 40 yards long and 15 feet high, topped with flat coping and three Janus-headed busts. To the left of the tomb, the doorway has a continuous chamfered surround with rounded shoulders. The interior of the tomb is tunnel-vaulted and contains two inscriptions. One, carved in stone, reads: "Here lyeth the Body of Madame Babington Who was laid in this Sepulchre the 9th of September 1670 My time is past as you may see I viewed the dead as you do me One day you'll lie as low as I And some will look on thee." The other inscription, painted on wood, appears to be later but is documented from the early 19th century: "In hopes of future bliss contented here I lie Though I would have been pleased to live, yet was not displeased to die."

Katherine Babington was a dissenter known for having the vicar of Bolam removed from his pulpit, an act that led to her excommunication and denial of burial in the churchyard.
