Description

The gates opposite the north transept of the church were built in 1828. They feature high rusticated piers topped with urns that have a Greek Key pattern around their edges. The gates themselves are made of cast-iron and have spear-head railings, providing access to the churchyard. Inscribed on the upper crosspiece are the names "Will" Armstrong, Ralph Watson, In Parker, and Thos Johnson, who were the churchwardens of Hexham in 1828. These gates, along with the archway to Cowgarth and the adjacent wall, form a significant group with St Andrew's Priory church.
