Description

The walled garden, located 200 metres northwest of Howick Hall, likely dates from the late 18th century. The south, east, and inner face of the west walls are constructed of brick, featuring alternate pairs of headers and stretchers every third course. The inner face of the north wall is also brick, laid in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 4. The ha-ha wall and the outer faces of the north and west walls are made of squared stone with tooled stone coping. Ashlar dressings adorn the doors on the south and east sides.

The garden is trapezoidal in shape, with a lawn terrace on the south side enclosed by the ha-ha wall. The south garden wall stands 3 metres high and is 23 bays long, featuring square pilasters on both faces and flat coping. The central bay contains a flush-panelled door set in an architrave. The slightly taller east wall has 13 bays with similar features and includes a segmental-headed arch near the north end. The west wall has internal pilasters only and a central segmental arch with boarded double doors. The north wall has brick-blocked heating ducts on its external face, three pairs of old chimney pots on the coping, and an inserted central gateway.

The ha-ha, which was being restored at the time of the survey, is 1 metre high and has low-pitched coping.
