Description
The main limekiln located to the east of the Limery is an early 19th-century structure that was enlarged later in the 19th century. It is built from roughly-coursed large squared rubble with cut quoins and dressings, featuring brick voussoirs in the transverse passage arches, eyes, and lining of pots. The kiln has a massive rectangular plan measuring approximately 30 metres by 18 metres, with a charging ramp on the south side. The eyes of the eight integral kilns open onto a central north-south passage, with additional airflow provided by three smaller transverse passages.
The external walls of the kiln are slightly battered. The north end features a tall central pointed arch with alternating jambs, while each side wall displays three smaller round arches, with the smallest arch located on the northern side. The overall height of the structure is about 18 metres. At the south end, there are sloped-down retaining walls leading to the end of the charging ramp. On top of the kiln, there are four pairs of elliptical pots.
Inside, the central passage has an ashlar pointed vault. Each side of the passage contains four segmental-headed drawing arches with projecting sills, as well as twin segmental-headed eyes separated by a pilaster. At the south end of the passage, there is a shaft leading to the surface, which is now capped. The three transverse passages show straight joints in their side walls, indicating that the kiln has been widened.
This limekiln is one of the largest 19th-century limekilns in the country and is generally well preserved.
