Description
This is a farmbuilding located approximately 50 yards east of Chollerton Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century and early 19th century. The structure is primarily constructed of random rubble with Welsh slate roofs and consists of four ranges surrounding a farmyard.
On the two-storey west side, there is a threshing barn on the left with a granary above it, and in front of this is a seven-storey tapering circular windmill. The windmill features stone steps leading up to the first floor, with a large opening that has an alternating-block surround on each floor. There is a band at the third floor level and projecting wooden hoists at the sixth and seventh floors. The rear of the windmill has a blocked pointed arch on the third floor, and the sails have been removed.
To the right of the windmill is a two-storey animal shelter with a granary above, which has four segmental arches on the ground floor. The south range consists of two-storey shelter sheds with a granary above and features five elliptical arches on the south wall. In front of these sheds are low random rubble walls that create exercise yards, along with two plank doors and three half-slatted windows facing the farmyard.
The north and east ranges are single-storey byres and stables, equipped with stable doors and half-slatted windows set in alternating-block surrounds. At the rear of the west range, towards the north end, there is an additional threshing shed made of snecked rubble, which has 16-pane windows. Attached to this is a tall square brick engine-house chimney topped with a concave stone cornice.
The roofs are gabled, and the windmill features a conical roof with a ball finial. There are later 19th-century hay sheds in the center of the farmyard, but these are not of special interest.
