Description

Kirkley Hall is a former country house, now an agricultural college, built in 1764 but largely rebuilt between 1927 and 1930 after a fire. It was constructed for the Ogle family and features ashlar stone with a graduated Lakeland slate roof.

The building is two storeys high with a five-bay central section flanked by one-bay projecting wings. There are two single-storey porches at the re-entrant angles, which have paired Tuscan pilasters and Tuscan columns in antis on the returns. The ground-floor windows are round-arched with glazing bars, while the first floor has four-pane sash windows with shutters. The rainwater heads are dated 1930. The hall has a moulded cornice, a panelled parapet, and a hipped roof with five large corniced stacks. A seven-bay pergola is attached to the front.

At the rear, there is a porte-cochere supported by square Tuscan columns. The entrance features a segmental-arched doorway within a bolection-moulded surround, topped with a keystone carved with the Ogle crest. The flanking windows have re-used lintels: the left one is inscribed with "CO DO" alongside Ogle shields, and the right one has "JSO CHO" also with shields. The rainwater heads at the rear are dated 1764 for Newton Ogle.
