Description
The Holy Island War Memorial is a significant structure made of Doddington stone. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it features a slender, tapering cross approximately 5 meters tall. The shaft has a lozenge shape, and its short cross arms are connected to the base with stop chamfers and cyma moulding. The cross rises from a three-stage base that sits on a low, circular step.
On the east face of the middle stage of the base, the principal inscription reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / 1914 – 1918." The west face bears a similar inscription for the later conflict, stating "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / 1939 – 1945." The names of the fallen are carved into the faces of the lower stage.
The memorial is located on The Heugh, south of the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, providing a view of Lindisfarne Castle and the harbour, with the Farne Islands visible to the east.
