Description

This is a range of farm buildings that includes a barn, byre, and smithy, located east of Fairshaw Farmhouse. They were built in the late 18th to early 19th century and consist of several constructions. The buildings are made of coursed rubble with stone dressings, topped with a purple slate roof and featuring a dressed stone chimney.

The structure is a single-storey linear range, with the barn on the left and the combined byre and smithy on the right. The taller barn has breathers and three chamfered doorways with alternating jambs and boarded doors, and its roof has coped gables. The byre features two boarded doors in similar surrounds, while the smithy on the right has tooled quoins and two segmental archways, one of which is partly blocked with an inserted casement. The smithy’s roof has lower eaves, coped gables, and a stack at the right end.

There is a 20th-century barn at the rear of the byre and smithy, but it is not of special interest. This range of buildings is included for its group value.
