Description
Longfield Cottage is a shelter shed with accommodation for a groom above, dating from the early 19th century. It was converted into a dwelling in the early 20th century. The building features tooled square stone and a Welsh slate roof with a brick stack. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The right bay contains a segmental arcade, which is now filled with a boarded door flanked by side lights, while the other bays have small-paned windows. Above, there is a two-pane casement window flanked by four-pane Yorkshire sashes. The hipped roof has a central ridge stack, and there is a 12-pane Yorkshire sash window on the left return of the first floor.
The cottage was likely built for the Riddell family's famous racehorses, such as Doctor Syntax, which were pastured here in the early 19th century. A wooden porch and an added brick rear outshut are present but are not of special interest.
