Description

Nos. 6-12 on Front Street is a terrace of shops built in the early 19th century. The building features tooled-and-margined stone and a purple slate roof. It is two storeys high with seven windows across the street front. The terrace has a plinth.

Starting from the right, No. 6 has two bays, with a part-glazed flush-panelled door on the far left and a tethering hook in the wall to the right of the door. It has four-pane sash windows in the left bay and a larger renewed six-pane sash with a twelve-pane sash in the right bay. No. 8 features a shopfront with panelled pilasters flanking central half-glazed doors, topped with a margined geometric overlight and four-pane fixed windows. Above, there are two four-pane sashes. No. 10 has a projecting canted shopfront with central half-glazed doors featuring ogee-headed panes and an overlight, along with shop windows that have arched panes beneath a moulded stone cornice. It also has a renewed twelve-pane sash above. No. 12 consists of two bays, with the right bay showcasing a six-panel door under a porch supported by octagonal columns with moulded capitals, which carry a frieze and moulded cornice. This bay also has renewed twelve-pane sash windows. All windows have slightly projecting sills. Nos. 6 and 8 have plain eaves cornices, while Nos. 10 and 12 feature moulded cornices on paired moulded brackets. The shallow-pitched hipped roof has three stepped axial ridge stacks, each carrying six or eight shafts with linked caps.

The left return of No. 12 displays twelve-pane sashes and a moulded eaves cornice on corbels. The right return has four irregular bays, including Nos. 1 and 3 The Lane. No. 1 has a renewed door, while No. 3 has a boarded door with a three-pane overlight, along with varied fenestration that includes twelve-pane sashes.

On the rear elevation, No. 8 features an arched stair window holding a twenty-four-pane sash with a radial-glazed head, while No. 12 has a similar window with intersecting glazing bars.
