Description
The ruined walls to the east of the Roman Catholic Church of Sacred Heart and St Cuthbert are remnants of a former manor house dating from the 15th century. Constructed from squared stone with cut dressings, the wall measures 4 metres long, 2 metres high, and is 1 metre thick. It features a window with two trefoil-headed lights and uncusped panels above. This manor belonged to Tynemouth Priory and may have served as a monastic cell. Evidence from the foundations exposed during the construction of the previous Catholic Chapel in 1897 suggests that this wall was part of a service wing connected to a hall to the west.
