Description
The old gate piers to the east of Gloster Hill Farmhouse date from the 17th century and are made of cut sandstone. They consist of two square piers with attached scroll-topped jambs. The faces of the piers feature panels with worn carvings, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded cornice below a finial that is formed from four diagonally-set scrolly brackets adorned with fruit and flower designs. The inner (west) faces of the piers have domed niches with keystones.
These gate piers served as the main entrance to Gloster Hill, a significant 17th-century house that was demolished in 1939. Many of its architectural features were later reused at Dunstan Hall in Craster parish.
