Description
The Old Mill, located 30 metres north of Haughton Mill House, is a paper mill founded in 1788 by Captain William Smith, with attached kennels added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The south elevation features two storeys and three irregular bays, with the left bay gabled. There are three boarded doors, two of which have timber lintels, while the third is set in an alternating-block surround. A boarded loft door is also present under a timber lintel. To the left, there are two kennels with railed exercise yards. The right return displays a broad arch for the tail race, a boarded window above it, and a part-slatted window on the first floor. The left return is boarded, indicating that part of the building has been demolished.
Inside, the first floor includes a fireplace with a tooled lintel, an arched set pot recess, and an ornamental cast iron oven door. The mill is included for its group value and historical interest, notably as the site where French assignats were forged in 1793 in an attempt to devalue French revolutionary currency.
