Description
This is a stable with an attached garden wall and outbuilding, located to the northwest of Newton Hall, dating from the late 18th century. The stable is constructed from squared stone with cut dressings, except for the ashlar south end. The garden wall is partly made of ashlar and partly of brick, and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate. The outbuilding is built from rubble with cut quoins and dressings. The stable is situated on the west side of the yard at the back of the Hall, with the garden wall extending west from the southwest corner of the stable, and the outbuilding attached to the north.
The east elevation of the stable, facing the yard, is two storeys high and has two bays. It features a boarded door with a four-pane overlight and a 12-pane sash window to the left, along with part-slatted windows above; all openings are framed in raised stone surrounds. The right end gable has raised reverse-stepped coping. The right return of the stable shows a boarded pitching door, while the rear elevation has a ground-floor sill band, with lower windows blocked and upper windows part-slatted.
The south elevation of the stable includes a plinth, sill band, and a blind Venetian window, all beneath an open-pedimented gable topped with a large urn finial. To the left of the stable is the attached garden wall, which has coping that ramps up behind an altered greenhouse. Beyond the greenhouse, there is a brick section of the wall that ends in a short return to a stone pyramid-capped pier. At the rear of the garden wall, there is a pent outbuilding featuring three 9-pane sash windows in chamfered alternating-block surrounds.
The garden wall and outbuilding are included for their group value.
