Description

The Ship Inn is an 18th-century inn, possibly incorporating earlier fabric, remodelled in the mid-19th century. It is accompanied by a terrace of three cottages, also dating to the 18th century and remodelled in the mid-19th century. The inn is constructed of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, whitewashed, and has a Welsh purple slate roof. It features orange brick stacks. The inn has two storeys and three irregular bays. A boarded door with a three-pane overlight is located slightly left of centre, behind a later pent roof porch. To the right of the door are four-pane sash windows, paired together. The inn has coped gables and end stacks. The cottages to the left are one storey high with attic space, and also have three irregular bays. They feature three four-panel doors, two of which are part-glazed, all located within 20th-century pent roof porches. Nos. 4 and 5 each have paired twelve-pane sash windows to the left of the porch and a small window to the right. No. 6 has paired plain sashes to the right of the porch. Each cottage has a half dormer with a nine-pane short sash in a stone surround, set under a coped gable with moulded kneelers. The cottages have a coped left end gable and two stepped-and-banded ridge stacks. The rear elevation of the inn reveals a central, semicircular stair turret with a conical roof, a relatively uncommon feature which may suggest origins in the 16th or 17th centuries. The pent roof porches are considered to be of little special interest.
