Description
A row of shops with living accommodation above, built in 1837 as part of the planned development alongside the harbour, undertaken by the contractors Sandersons. The buildings are constructed from carefully worked stone, with artificial blue slate roofs on numbers 31 and 33, and a mix of green and blue slate roofs on numbers 35, 37, and 39. The chimney stacks have been rebuilt in yellow brick, set on stone bases. The buildings have two storeys and four bays each, with the exception of number 39 which has four bays. The shop fronts have been replaced in the 20th century, with the exception of the stone pilasters between the shops and the doorway of number 35, which retain an old scrolled bracket above the pilaster on the left of the door. A moulded sill band is present on the first floor of number 35, and may be visible behind the 20th-century fascia boards on the other properties. The windows are mostly 12-pane sashes, some of which have been renewed, although number 35 retains centre-hinged casements in the original window openings. Number 33 has pilasters with capitals at the ends of the first floor, below a stepped moulded eaves band between numbers 33 and 35. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the area.
