Description
Brus Wall, located approximately 60 meters to the south-west of St. Mary Magdalene's Church, is the remains of a manor house dating from around 1300, associated with the de Brus and Clifford families. The wall is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring dressed limestone dressings and quoins, and stands approximately 4 meters high.
From left to right, the wall includes a wide, chamfered, segmental doorway with an arch that has been renewed in brick on the north side, along with a relieving arch above it. There is a first-floor lancet window with a decayed trefoil head, and a rectangular first-floor window opening from around 1600, which has a segmental head on the north side. The north face of the wall also shows two floor-joist corbels and a chamfered plinth.
To the left, the lower section of the wall is part of a slightly later extension, which contains a bricked-up doorway and window opening. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 93.
