Description

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a building of Anglo Saxon origins, with significant additions and alterations spanning from the 12th to the 19th centuries. It was restored in the late 19th century and again in 1927/34 and 1977/80, with the roofs being renewed around 1930. The church is constructed of squared random limestone rubble, with coursed stone to the chancel, south aisle and tower, and features squared quoins. The nave roof is stainless steel, while the chancel and porch are covered with Lakeland slate.

The church consists of a nave with north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel, and a west tower. The tower has three stages with chamfered step-backs, and a straight parapet with stepped eaves and ogee angle finials. It has louvred rectangular belfry openings on the west and south faces, and lancet windows elsewhere. The church features 13th and 15th century windows in the nave's east and west walls, with other windows altered in 1806 and during the late 19th century. A round-headed south doorway has two moulded orders. The porch has a gabled design with a segmental-arched doorway featuring double hollow chamfers, and a carving of St. George and the Dragon on the south face of the chancel, dating from around 1500.

The off-centre semi-circular tower arch has roll mouldings, impost bands, and nook shafts. The two-bay north arcade comprises semi-circular triple-chamfered arches, while the four-bay south arcade is slightly pointed with double-chamfered arches. Both arcades have octagonal piers and responds with moulded caps and bases. The north face of the north arcade retains traces of an Anglo Saxon window within the spandrel, along with mask rafter corbels. The semi-circular chancel arch has three chamfered orders resting on ½-octagonal responds, with remains of an Anglo Saxon arch visible in the wall above and a contemporary opening higher up. A window in the north aisle contains stained glass dating from around 1898 by K. Ayll & Co. (Leeds). The church holds a square 12th century font with angle shafts and plain sides, as well as an octagonal 14th century font decorated with figures and emblems of saints, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection, along with figures of saints in ogee niches and putti heads at the angles of the plinth. An altar mensa from the Pre-Reformation period is also present. A monument from around 1783 stands on the south wall of the chancel; it is likely made of Coade stone and painted, featuring a reeded aedicule with a broken pediment and flaming urns as acroteria. Fragments of a Saxon sundial, grave slabs, and carved stones are found in the north-west corner of the nave, below the pulpit and built into the west wall. A 13th century piscina is located in the south aisle. There are six carved masks built into the porch walls.
