Description
Voltigeur Cottage is a stable that has been converted into a cottage, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of random limestone rubble, which has been rendered and whitewashed. The cottage features a mid-20th century concrete tiled roof with stone gable coping, and it has a lateral stack on the left and a ridge stack, both of which are rendered.
The building is single storey and has a sash window with glazing bars on either side of an off-centre mid-20th century boarded door. To the left, there is a horizontal sash window. All windows have painted stone lintels and sills. A stained glass window is present at the rear.
This cottage is notable as the birthplace of Voltigeur, a famous racehorse from the 19th century that won the Derby, St. Leger, and Doncaster Cup in 1850. The adjoining cottage on the right and a mid-20th century extension to the left are not of interest. At the time of the survey, the cottage was in a dilapidated condition.
