Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a tall cruciform church located in Darlington, primarily built in the early 13th century. The nave features aisles, while the transepts and chancel are aisleless, with three external stages. The chancel was rebuilt in 1864-1865 in a style that reflects the original design. The crossing tower, topped with a stone spire, was rebuilt in 1752. The church is constructed of ashlar stone, with some areas restored. It has plain, wide lancet windows arranged in stepped groups or alternating with blank spaces, along with a round window in the head of the south transept and some 11th-century windows in the aisles. Above the west door, there is a niche that holds a replica of a figure of Saint, while the original, which is worn, is located in the north transept. The nave features simple arcading with alternating round compound and octagonal piers. The east end has more elaborate mouldings, with shafts that have stiff-leaf capitals and arches adorned with nutmeg and other decorative elements. An inserted low crossing arch supports an organ above it. Notable interior features include an early 14th-century piscina, a 15th-century Easter sepulchre, a Frosterley marble font with a 17th-century wooden cover featuring Bishop Cosin-type carving, and 16th-century choir stalls with carved misericords. Additionally, there is a late 13th-century tomb figure attached to the south wall.
